Our History

We were chartered as an Optimist Club on February 29th, 1984 with 75 members. In four months we grew our ranks to 108 members. As we celebrated our 25th Anniversary recently, we realized that of those 75 original charter members, there were only 8 left.

Our club is proud to have introduced the Kids Safety Seat Program into St. Mary's County. At the time, St. Mary's County would match your donation of seats. With our purchase of 30 seats, 60 kids of St. Mary's County became safer on the roadways. People could sign out the car seats on loan for as long as they needed it. Most were never returned, a true testament to the safety of car seats for kids.

Chartering and assisting other clubs is also in our DNA. We chartered the Hollywood Optimist Club in 1985 and two years ago, we chartered the Tall Timbers club as well.

The Optimist Creed

Promise Yourself-To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

Just Ask

Two simple, powerful words. We are here in the community to do everything we can to make things better for our kids. When a child needs glasses but can't afford to pay for them, we're here to help. When a child has difficulty hearing and is in need of an aid, we're here to help. Needed dental work, especially for those among us without insurance, is a real financial challenge. We're here to help kids in need when these and other situations arise. We just need to know how we can help you so - just ask!
